We had two speakers at our meeting on March 2nd- Michael Pugh and our newest honorary member Charles Haley, an NFL superstar.
Michael is District 5810's Youth Exchange officer. He has led Group Exchange teams to Thailand and India as well as hosting a youth from Latvia. In addition to his many Rotary commitments he is a Texas Ambassador for Shelter Box. High school students can participate in a summer exchange or one for a full academic year. Your reporter can vouch for the value and experiences of an exchange since our son participated in a summer exchange to Germany. We continue to maintain the friendships made which include multiple personal visits.

It is not difficult to see why Charles became an NFL star, collecting 5 Super Bowl rings, three of which as a Dallas Cowboy. He exemplifies hard work and a commitment to excellence and to overcoming hurdles. As a child he never became a competent reader in which he ultimately prevailed while a student at James Madison University. His athletic talent coupled with his work ethic and perseverance led to his success in the NFL culminating in his induction to the Hall of Fame. Charles's strong belief in helping others resulted in establishing Tackle Tomorrow. a non-profit organization which supports reading programs at six DISD elementary schools. On behalf of the club, President Cindi presented him with a $2500 check to help in this important endeavor.
