Bike Rodeo & Child Safety Day

Rotary Club of Dallas & Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children 

The goal is to give Children from around the Dallas Community the opportunity to learn about safety in a fun, family environment. This event is free of charge to all participants, so come join the fun! Over the course of 11 years more than 4,000 Dallas area children have been influenced by this program. 

  • In Texas 13 children under the age of 15 lose their lives due to cyclist accidents annually. 

  • A survey of Texas students revealed 92% under the age of 15 who ride bicycles almost never or rarely wore a helmet. 

  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Association reports that one-seventh (14%) of the cyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2010 were between 5 and 15 years old.  

  • The Centers for Disease Control reports wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of brain injury by as much as 88%.

About the Program
 
The Rotary Club of Dallas and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital invite community Friends and children of all ages each year to the Bike Rodeo and Child Safety Day for an educational and entertaining morning. Child Safety Day is designed to teach Dallas area children and parents about traffic safety and general safety including poison control and fire and water safety. Children have the opportunity to see the Dallas Police Department and CareFlite Helicopters land and participants interactive with the flight crew, meet the official Dallas Fire Safety Robot and Dallas Police Department Bike Bot and take the "Safety Day Pledge”.
 
Children also may participate in an official fingerprinting activity with the Dallas Police Department, explore the inside of a fire truck and experience exhibits from a variety of community partners. Lunch is served to all children and their families who attend.  Bike Rodeo safety course provides a safe environment for children to practice bicycle safety skills by riding on a course designed to simulate actual road conditions. The activities will help make children aware of bicycle safety issues and will teach parents the importance of ensuring that children always use safety equipment. Children will have their bikes inspected and have the chance to win a bike of their own. 
 
Every child is fitted and receives a complimentary bike helmet. Children who attend are also entered into a raffle to win new bikes, annually we give out about 25-30.We try to help our young riders understand that choosing to not wear this protective gear for any reason is unacceptable.  
 
Child Safety Day is designed to teach community children about traffic safety and general safety including poison control and fire and water safety. Children will have the opportunity to see the Dallas Police Department and CareFlite helicopters land, meet the official Dallas Fire Department mascot, Sparky the Dog and take the "Safety Day Pledge.” Children will get to explore the inside of a fire truck and learn about internet safety from the DA's Office.
