Almost daily, we hear about the strategic threat posed by North Korea. Many may not realize that more than 20 million people live under some of the most horrible conditions in the world. Representatives from the George W. Bush Institute will talk about their work on North Korea, which focuses on raising awareness about the human rights situation in the country and a unique new program to assist the small community of North Korean refugees that have resettled in the United States. |

Steven L. Cobb is the Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of North Texas. He also serves as Director of the Center for Economic Education and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics. He attended Southwestern University for his undergraduate work in Economics and Political Science. Cobb received his Ph.D. in Economics in 1987 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He joined the faculty at the University of North Texas in 1986 and teaches principles of microeconomics and principles of macroeconomics at the undergraduate level and courses in international economics, comparative economic systems, and history of economic thought at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Cobb conducts research in the areas of economic education, international trade and economic development. He was involved as an author of the textbook, International Economics, by Appleyard, Field, and Cobb through its seventh edition. In October 2006, the National Association of Economic Educators presented Steve with the Bessie B. Moore Service Award for outstanding service and dedication to excellence and innovation in Economic Education. In 2005, Cobb received the Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award from the Southern Economic Association. He also served as President of the National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE) in 2000 and his Center for Economic Education received the 2005 Albert Beekhuis Award for Centers of Excellence in Economic Education and he has been selected to receive this award again for 2018. Cobb has just completed an 8 year term as a member of the American Economic Association’s Committee on Economic Education and was the President of the Society for Economic Educators in 2016. He is currently a member of the National Assessment of Educational Progress Committee on Economics and is Vice-President of the Global Economic Education Alliance. Steven Cobb conducts teacher workshops for school districts throughout Texas and across the United States. In addition, Cobb served as a consultant and trainer for the Council for Economic Education’s EconomicsInternational Training of Trainers program for developing and transitional nations from 1994-2011. The program was funded by the U.S. Department of Education and designed to provide materials and training to allow economists in these nations to teach economics from a market perspective using an active learning approach. Cobb has conducted training programs in Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt and most recently Indonesia and Paraguay. Since 2012, Cobb has been teaching graduate courses in International Economics for U.S. military personnel in the U.S., England, and Germany in the Advanced Programs curriculum. Since 2017, he has been involved in the Youth Win through Economic Participation program in Indonesia. The program is funded by USAID and has developed a curriculum to help poor and vulnerable youth improve their financial life skills in order to become better employees and more productive citizens. He enjoys the international aspect of his work and tries to integrate this experience into his teaching. |

Samuel “Sam” Thompson is the Scout Executive/CEO of the Circle Ten Council in Dallas, Texas. With a passion for what Scouting provides the youth of America, Sam is committed to growing the number of Scouts within the 24-county council territory. In fact, his goal is to increase the membership to over 114,000 youth members by the year 2027 (doubling the number of Scouts from when he took the reins). Sam grew up in Reno, Nevada. He earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1979 in Troop 152. Sam graduated from University of Nevada with a Bachelor of Science in Resource Management. Sam’s scouting career began in 1990 when he served as District Executive in the Reno, Nevada council. Sam also held the positions of Senior District Executive, and Director of Field Service. He became the Assistant Scout Executive, in Sacramento, California, in 1999. In January of 2002 Sam moved into the position of Scout Executive for the Ore-Ida Council in Boise, Idaho. In 2006, he was promoted to the Cub Scout Division Director at the National Council. Sam became the Membership Impact Department Manager in 2008. In 2010, Sam took leadership of the Regional Support Department and in April 2014, he became department manager of the Strategic Performance Office. In 2015 he took the helm of the Information Technology Group, responsible for transforming BSA systems into a user-friendly experience that addresses the needs of the membership, making extensive progress in Online Registration, Scoutbook, Blackbaud CRM, My.Scouting tools. Sam is married to Debi and they have a son, Nicolas. Sam’s hobbies are: parenting, golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening. |

D A N I E L R O B Y A native Texan and Baylor grad, Daniel Roby serves as Executive Director for the Austin Street Center. Austin Street Center is the largest free emergency homeless shelter in the City of Dallas and is the only area emergency shelter that focuses on the older homeless population. In 2016, Daniel was appointed by Mayor Mike Rawlings to participate in the City of Dallas’ Commission on Homelessness. This Commission is tasked with analyzing the community’s current system for addressing homelessness, comparing it to best practices of similar communities, and delivering a focused set of strategies and recommendations for the City and Dallas County to consider going forward. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance and chair of the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) committee. Under Daniel’s leadership, Austin Street has doubled the size of case management and staff, and more programs and services have been added to help individuals successfully end their homelessness. Daniel received the Nonprofit CEO of the Year award in November 2017 from CNM Connect in Dallas. Also, he was selected in January 2018 as a recipient for the Dallas Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” award, which honors the top 40 North Texas men and women in business under the age of 40. Daniel and his wife Lesley enjoy raising their four children in the Lake Highlands neighborhood in Dallas. |

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION - STEPHEN JONES Stephen Jones is an Enid, Oklahoma, attorney whose practice is limited to trials and appeals. He attended the University of Texas, graduated from the University of Oklahoma Law School in 1966, and was admitted to the Bar that same year. In 1964, he was the personal research assistant to Richard M. Nixon, and in 1967 was legal counsel to the Governor of Oklahoma. From 1966 to 1969, he worked as administrative assistant to Congressman Paul Findley and as a special assistant to Senator Charles Percy. In 1968, he served as a member of the United States delegation to the North Atlantic Assembly. From 1970 to 1974, he was general counsel for the A.C,L.U. in Oklahoma, He was the Republican nominee for Attorney General of Oklahoma in 1974 and for the United States Senate in 1990. Stephen practices law office in Enid, Oklahoma, with an additional office in Oklahoma City. A substantial portion of his practice is devoted to commercial and criminal litigation. On May 8, 1995, he was appointed by the United States District Court to serve as the principal defense counsel for Timothy James McVeigh, charged in the Oklahoma City bombing case. Mr. Jones is the author of numerous Law Review articles on the subject of the Oklahoma City bombing case, and is the author of Others Unknown, The Oklahoma City Bombing Case and Conspiracy, published by Public Affairs, New York (1998), revised and reissued in paperback in May 2001. He is also the author of a two-volume work, Oklahoma Criminal Law Practice & Procedure, published by West Publishing Company.

Laila Assanie is a senior business economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. As a member of the Research Department’s regional group, she conducts research on regional economic issues, produces articles for various bank publications and contributes to the Dallas Fed’s website. Her other responsibilities include briefing the Bank’s president on regional economic conditions, coordinating the production of various economic updates and indicators for the Dallas Fed website and writing the Eleventh District Beige Book—the Bank’s survey of regional economic conditions. Assanie holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Northwestern University and a masters in economics and finance from the London School of Economics. |

The 22 high school seniors of the Texas Leadership Forum, under the direction of Woodrow seniors Robert Bustamante and Abby Cuccia, are hosting a National Drug Take Back day site at Woodrow on Saturday, October 27, 2018 as well as Human Trafficking Victims support site from 10 am to 2 pm. The two sites will be adjacent to each other by the head-in parking area in front of the school on Glasgow. DISD PD will be assisting along with DPD and volunteers. We appreciate the support we have receive from DEA as well. Other event sponsors the students recruited are listed on the fliers. Please pass the word that the TLF students from 9 area high schools need support for these two important community projects they have undertaken. Items Needed: |
