The Ambassadorial Scholarship is The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International's oldest and best-known program and was founded in 1947.
Since then, nearly 40,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. Nearly 700 scholarships were awarded for study in 2009-10.
Through grants totaling approximately US$16.2 million, recipients from about 70
countries studied in more than 80 nations. The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.

Application process:
The Rotary Club of Dallas will accept applications and interview scholars for the Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship for study which will take place during the 2012-13 academic year. Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide a flat grant of US$27,000 for one academic year of study in another country. These awards are intended to help defray costs associated with round-trip transportation, tuition and other fees, room and board, and some educational supplies. Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships may be used for almost any field of study but cannot be applied to unsupervised research, medical internships or residencies, or employment. Scholars planning to pursue medical studies are not permitted to engage in hands-on procedures or direct-care patient services during the scholarship period. Any applicant for Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships whose native language is not that of the proposed country of study must submit evidence of the ability to read, write, and speak the language of that country. Academic-year scholarship candidates must also pass a language proficiency exam determined by the Foundation.
The deadline for students to apply to the Rotary Club of Dallas for the 2012-13 Rotary Foundation Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship is March 18, 2011. Please ensure that your students understand that this is the deadline for the Rotary Club of Dallas to receive the students' applications and not a postmark deadline. There are no exceptions and late applications will not be considered for selection.
Applicants for the Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship must be available for a telephonic interview sometime during the week of March 21-25, 2011 with a panel of Rotary Club members from The Rotary Club of Dallas. The exact time and date of such interview will be determined later based on the number of applicants and availability of both interviewees and interviewers; and we are willing to work with the applicant's schedules in order to ensure that they have an opportunity to interview. The applicant(s) endorsed by The Rotary Club of Dallas Ambassadorial Scholarship Subcommittee will be recommended to District 5810 and will be interviewed by the district as well. District 5810 sets its own timeline for interviews and selected students will be notified of that at the appropriate time.
